Overview
PASIPHAE Lab. is a research unit of the Applied Informatics and Multimedia Department (AIM) in TEI of Crete that was established in 2004 and formally instituted in 2005 with a twofold mission: a) to support students to acquire fundamental theoretical knowledge, technological know-how and high quality laboratory skills, and b) to conduct research in selected scientific areas and undertake development activities in state-of-the-art technologies. Towards achieving these objectives, PASIPHAE's activities are supported by institutional funding, as well as by National and European funded R&D programmes. To this extent, PASIPHAE offers opportunities for industrial placement and contract-based work for graduate students. Additionally PASIPHAE has established liaisons with industry, universities and other research laboratories to support graduates in search of working experience or postgraduate studies.
Today, the PASIPHAE laboratory brings-in professors from the Applied Information Technology and Multimedia Department, visiting professors and researchers from national and international universities, post-PhD associates, as well as a number of PhD and MSc students. The laboratory specialises in specific scientific areas of Broadcasting technologies, Networked Media and Communication systems, and posses extensive experience in the design, implementation and performance evaluation of convergent network/services infrastructures under real/actual conditions. This experience and expertise is outlined in more than 70 publications in referred scientific journals, selected international conferences and workshops, as well as by a number of non-self citations and book-chapters.
Educational Activities
The staff of PASIPHAE laboratory is actively involved in all AIM's educational activities including taught lectures in theoretical subjects as well as supervision and administration of under graduate theses.
Taught Lectures: Wireless Networks, Data Networks, Digital TV, Digital Interactive Broadcasting, Integrated Services Communication Networks, Peer-to-Peer Systems
Diploma Theses: Wireless and Mobile Networks, Hybrid broadcast and Internet platforms, Cognitive Radio and Dynamic Spectrum Access, Network Management, QoS/QoE evaluation, Content Aware Networks, Interactive Systems and P2P services.
Additionally, PASIPHAE's staff is actively involved in the advisory and supervisory boards of eight (8) PhDs. Five of these PhDs are been carrying out within PASIPHAE laboratory, with two of them been funded under the "HERAKLEITOS" programme.
Research & Development
Research and development activities in PASIPHAE are dated since its early establishment in 2004, mainly focused on the fields of broadband communications, wireless and mobile networks. (WiFi, WiMAX, LTE, UMTS), interactive broadcasting systems and services (DVB-T/H/S), network management (QoS, DiffServ, IntServ, MPLS), distributed systems and applications (P2P), network virtualization, content aware networks (CAN) and cloud computing services (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS). As a result of its past and current R&D activities, PASIPHAE has attracted and acquired a total funding of more than 2Meuro within the framework of national and European R&D funded projects, among which are the "EPITHRHTHS", "I4CRETE", "PASIPHAE", "DIAMOYSES", IST/FP6-507312 "ATHENA" (Technical Coordination), IST/FP6-34692 "REPOSIT", IST/FP6-025457 "IMOSAN", ICT/FP7-224287 "VITAL++" and the recent ICT/FP7-248652 "ALICANTE", project.
PASIPHAE laboratory was first to design, develop and demonstrate Terrestrial Digital Interactive TV in Greece, and among the pioneers at European level. The implemented infrastructure was acknowledged as the standard model for broadband access in African countries, during WITFOR 2005, IFIP, under the UNESCO support.
PASIPHAE's staff holds the general-chair of the International Conference on Telecommunications and Multimedia (TEMU), which is held every two years with the participation of honoured scientists around the globe.
